Can you use concealer as foundation

Concealed and foundation are the basic makeup requirements. Many of our skin problems can be solved with concealer. And all of our face gets an even tone with foundation. However, in summer, we like to have lighter makeup. To this many women have raised a most interesting question whether concealers can be used as a foundation? Let’s see what this makeup trick can do.

Can you use concealer as foundation?

Yes, you can use concealer as foundation. Because the concealer is very much close to the foundation. It is as effective as a foundation to cover dark lines, wrinkles, blemishes, and other imperfections by hiding pigments on the skin.

You can apply concealer either on the top of the foundation base or alone on the bare skin.

The purpose of the foundation is to create an even tone. Like foundation, a concealer offers a variety of skin toning options. Along with hiding blemishes, concealer gives your skin a targeted layer of protection for further makeup. Because it is thicker than foundation, it gets blended and works best to achieve the matte finish all day. It’s fine to use concealer and skip foundation completely (if you like to keep it real simple).

Benefits of using concealer without foundation

Coverage

Concealers are the best to shape the most visible areas like the eyebrows. Even your foundation will not do it so smoothly and perfectly like a concealer. A thin layer of concealer around the eyes can change the look by creating the same effect as you would have by applying the foundation.

Blur Fine Lines

Wrinkles and fine lines are common on the face. The best thing is these can be eliminated. Thanks to the beauty of cosmetics. Concealers can do wonders to blur those lines around the eyes, lips, and forehead with just a coat. All you need is to find the correct color that matches your skin type.

Contour

Contouring is the quality of a good concealer. If you want a sharper angle to your jaw or want to soften the chiseled line, mixing two shades of concealer is one of the easiest looks to accomplish with.

Cover Dark Circles

Dark circles under eyes, no worries. Concealer is great on the go. Even if you apply only concealer without foundation, it helps to create a flawless, matte-like finish.

Highlight the cheekbones

Using concealer on your cheekbones illuminate your skin. Choose a shade lighter than what you are using for full coverage, to feature your cheeks and even chin, and blend using a sponge or brush.

Primer for lips

Concealer is one of the best alternatives to the foundation. It has many applications being just a concealer. It is the ideal primer for the lips. A thin amount on the lips makes them smooth and even hides the lines, creating an even tone.

Texture

Concealers are thicker and smudge-resistant than foundation. Here you can take its benefit to improve the skin appearance and for masking discolorations.

How to apply concealer as foundation on the face

You can definitely use your concealer at times as a foundation owing to its versatility. Ideally, the foundation should come first. My suggestion is: if you are using a concealer for the full face coverage, follow these steps to apply it correctly on your face.

Step 1: Prep your skin

Before applying any makeup you must prepare your skin. Start by washing your face with a cleanserApply serum and moisturize to hydrate. Yes even if you have oily skin, moisturize it anyway. If your plans are going out, protect yourself with a small amount of sunblock.

Now your next step is the concealer as you don’t want foundation.

Step 2: Conceal under the eyes

This is the first step of makeup. Rather than spreading it all over, draw a triangle beneath your eyes. Using a brush or the tip of your finger, gently dab the concealer and work it into your skin, do not rub it as this will ruin your look.

Make sure you don’t drag the concealer to other parts, otherwise it can lead to caking.

Step 3: Apply on spots and blemishes

For hiding pimples and blemishes, try a full coverage concealer. Treat the individual spot or any mark you want to conceal. Dab the concealer onto the top of each spot, and then blend it softly onto your skin.

Once you are done with spot treating, wear the concealer over the area with redness and acne. For acne don’t use fingers, go with a brush.

Step 4: Focus around the nose

Work the concealer up on the inside of your nose. Most people often ignore the area. It’s important to cover the dark areas around the nose to make you look fresh and natural.

Step 5: Conceal around the mouth for fuller lips

If you had the foundation most of your darker areas would be blurred because it is applied on the whole face. Since you now have concealer, apply it around the lips where it is dark. To get fuller lips, apply a bit of concealer on your lips and protect your lipstick from fading.

Step 5: Conceal around the brows

In order to shape your eyebrows, first, fill your brows using a brow pencil and then apply the concealer around in small dots. Blend it nicely under and on the top of eyebrows.

Step 6: Set the concealer with powder

When you are done with concealing, use powder to lock it well with the skin. Not on I will prevent from creasing it offers a more natural skin tone.

Concealer vs foundation

The application of concealer and foundation is to get a flawless and natural makeup look. Both of the products work on the surface of the skin to cover the skin pores and any blemishes. But one cannot replace the need of others. Although at times you can wear concealer as foundation, the purpose of foundation cannot be served. There are some differences that will help you know more about the two.

Formulations

Foundation is made up of emollients, oils, binding agents, fatty alcohol that helps it to adhere to the skin.  A concealer on the other hand used for hiding age marks is thicker containing oils, starch, alcohol, talc, and color additives as well.

Coverage

Foundations offer anything from sheer light coverage to blur out slight imperfections for a natural look, to full coverage of the face. Concealers are usually medium to full coverage and completed work on the spot treatment and under-eye areas. In short, it covers all the dark areas on the face. Concealers can be used alone or with foundation.

Color selection

When you opt for foundation, you will have to select that is close to your skin tone to get uniformity in your face and neck. Concealer is usually of the light shade to effectively brighten up the dark and dull areas. There are multi-colored concealer palettes to choose from. The one I have been using is Stila Correct & Perfect All-In-One Color Correcting Palette

Versatile

If you’re going for a fully done-up look, choose both. Apply foundation first and then conceal. For everyday makeup that looks more natural and light, I suggest you choose concealer for its versatility. Concealers usually offer fuller and thicker coverage than a foundation, and usually, concealer has a few extra makeup hacks too.

Types of Concealer

There are different types of concealer formulations available. Like any skincare product or cosmetic product, you should always know your skin type, while picking up your concealer take into account the facts and details for each type.

Liquid Concealer

The most common and most versatile among all types of concealers. Liquid concealers are available in satin, radiant shimmer, and matte finish. Matte finish is ideal for normal to oily skin as it helps to lock the oils from trapping through pores. A thin layer of liquid is enough to cover the face imperfections. Satin is perfect to achieve a natural look. It is also the best for dry skin as it has more movement. To add a soft glow under your eyes and other parts, a shimmer radiant finish is the best.

Stick Concealer

Stick concealers are most popular for their easy application. They have a semi-solid texture and thick consistency. it is great for dry, sensitive, and combination skin.  Sticks however don’t go well on acne and blemishes. There are chances the creamy formula can cause breakouts.

Cream-based concealer

This type of concealer works well for dry and combination skin. Cream concealers offer medium to full coverage and can be applied with your fingers to mask any discolorations. Since this has a thicker formula than a liquid concealer, it can be used to cover heavy dark circles, acne, and scars easily.

Powder concealer

Powder concealer is a lightweight loose formula. it can be your best when you don’t want a thick consistency. Apply powder concealer with a brush on your areas and you will feel you aren’t wearing any makeup. It is ideal for all skin types and with the powder-based formula, you won’t suffer from breakouts or clogged pores.

Color Correcting Concealer

Colour correction is the method of using skin complementing colors to help you get rid of skin discoloration. Colour corrector concealers are much like creamy concealers. Both have similar textures. The colors that are used for color correcting are completely different from the skin tone so that it vanishes the effect of blemishes and improves the texture. The colors that are generally used are green, lavender, yellow, and a few other coral shades. Each color is used to target a specific area of concern. You have to learn some basic color combination techniques in order to apply them to the face.
