Is scrubbing good for oily skin?

Oily skin means extra care. The excessive oil that appears on the skin makes the skin appear dull, flaky, and break out. The one way out there is scrubbing. Scrubbing is one of the recommended processes of cleaning the skin and getting smooth, blemish-free, and glowing.

Oily skin may be exfoliated more often than any other skin type. When you scrub your skin, you get rid of the excessive oil and dead cells. But is scrubbing actually beneficial for oily skin? Want to find out: Let’s go!

What actually makes the skin oily?

Before you think of using a natural or chemical scrub you must know the skin processes. Why your skin is oily and flaky? What factors contribute to this? is it eating habits or what?

Oily skin happens when the sebaceous glands in the skin make too much sebum. Sebum is basically the waxy, oily substance that protects and hydrates the skin. It is a natural process of the skin to produce oil.  Sebum is important for keeping the skin healthy.

In some people, the sebaceous gland can produce more oil. This actually creates oily skin. You can’t completely get rid of your skin type. Because it is dependent on various factors such as genetics, hormonal changes, environment, and lifestyle. Even age, the time of the year, and wrong skin care products can become the cause of oily skin. Once you have known your skin health, you’ll need to give time to work on it.

Any good care skin routine begins with a deep cleaning- scrubbing process.

If you haven’t been scrubbing recently then you start proper gentle exfoliation, and you will sure to notice changes.

What is a Scrub?

A scrub is a type of skincare product used to exfoliate the skin. Facial scrubs contain coarse particles to manually remove dead skin cells. When you apply scrub you gently rub the particles over the skin and it removes all the dirt and oil. It is just removing dull-skin debris and allowing oxygen to transfer the lower layers of skin. A face scrub can save you from many skin issues one like oily skin.

However many people fear using a scrub on their face. It is important that you consider everything before applying it to the face.

So, let’s find out if you’re right or wrong about using a scrub for oily skin.

Yes, scrubbing is completely beneficial for oily skin when done in the right process. Scrubbing is the easiest and quickest way to clear sebum, blackheads, and acne-causing bacteria off your face like nothing else.

Having oily skin can spoil your outdoor life. Hiding it with makeup would do more harm than good. While dermatologists suggest that the best way is to find a clean skincare routine and stick to it consistently.

Anything we ever apply on oily skin will go waste making it greasy. It is better to clean the oil from the skin frequently to avoid other skin-related issues. And in this process of cleaning the skin, scrubbing is one step. You probably have used a scrub in a beauty parlor, yet scrubbing can be confusing. Homemade scrubs are also a great way of taking care of the skin. Some people deny homemade remedies on their skin, but these are completely safe and healthy. Exfoliation is the key to Hydration.

How to use face scrub for oily skin?

To use a scrub follow the steps as directed here:

This process is basically called exfoliating. Before using any exfoliating scrub wash your face with a face wash. You can also use warm water to soften the skin. Now,

Step 1 Take the scrub and spread it on the hands

Just take the right amount on your palm and gently rub your hands to spread it evenly on the hands. This way it makes it easy to cover all your face areas. Don’t get carried away with using more to remove the excess oil, it won’t go that way.

Step 2 Scrub your face gently

Gently massage the scrub with your hands all over the face in a circular motion. Target one area at a time for 3-4 seconds like forehead, nose, chin, or cheeks. Be cautious about when scrubbing near your eyes. Don’t rub it hard, the particles present could damage the skin. Do it like giving a massage to a baby. Continue for 4-5 minutes or till you are satisfied.

Step3 Rinse the face with water

Lukewarm water would be a good choice. Remove all the scrub from the face. Leave the face for few seconds.

Step 4 Pat Dry

This is not the last step of scrubbing but important too. Some people rub the face with a towel after wash which is very bad for the skin and after the scrubbing or even cleansing don’t rub. Use a soft tissue if you feel like you are not confident about rubbing. While patting dry take care of the skin acne that won’t get a rub.

Step 5 Moisturize

After scrubbing your face you will feel that the oil is removed and the skin softens and smooth. Applying moisturizer afterward calms down the face controlling the oil production.

Is daily scrubbing good for oily skin?

No daily scrubbing is not good for your skin. The accepted rule for any skin type is once a week. For people dealing with oily faces can do it twice or thrice a week. The frequency of scrubbing your face depends on your skin type and the scrub you are using. If you are using a homemade scrub it becomes a healthy scrubbing that can be practiced several times a week. Dry skin people should avoid it often.

To get the best results, what I would recommend is doing it at night. After that, a night shower is the best to remove all the oils and apply the moisturizer overnight and relax completely. Even if you are not a night person, anytime in the morning would be great. Give your skin proper time to relax after scrubbing. Because the pores are open and clean and could easily get clogged with dirt and dust. While going out, scrub before two to three hours and protect the face with sunscreen to prevent any dirt contact when out.

Does scrubbing clear acne?

is scrubbing good for oily skin?

Although Scrubbing is cleaning the clogged pores of the face it is not effective to treat skin acne. Scrubbing cleans the skin surface, removes blackheads, can cure minor bumps or pimples but it is not the right choice to clear acne. It doesn’t penetrate deep into the pores, where pimples develop.

Acne occurs due to various factors. Hormonal imbalance, eating habits, or when the skin pores are blocked with oil. These problems, in the long run, contribute to the development of pimples.

To get acne-free skin only self-care will not help, medication becomes necessary too.

Keeping in mind that you cannot completely get rid of the oily skin type. Follow these below steps to reduce the symptoms of oily skin without using prescribed drugs.

  • Wash regularly

Wash your face regularly with clean warm water. The oily face needs to be kept clean always. Unlike dry skin which requires moisture after wash, you are saved and can wash your face multiple times.

  • Use a gentle face wash or soap to wash
  • Avoid hard chemicals or soaps with added fragrances, they won’t do any good to prevent oil. Instead can irritate or dry out the skin by removing natural oils.
  • Avoid any washcloths on the face. The skin is soft and gentle and rubbing it will harm it.

  • Use a toner

A face is a necessary beauty product nowadays. Many people call it a secret skincare weapon. A water-based liquid is worth investing in for all skin types. It gently refreshes the skin without stripping off the natural moisture from the skin. Also, it prevents excessive dryness and can be used even on sensitive skin. Toner removes all the dirt from your face and when added to daily skincare makes your skin vibrant and glowing. Use it after scrubbing and washing the face and before applying moisturizer.

  • Keep your face dry

To keep your oily face skin make sure your face is dry. Water on the face increases the chances of spreading the sebum all over the face. Pat dry with a towel very gently. Even after using a toner take a few minutes to stand under the fan to let it dry.

  • Carry blotting papers

When you are out use specially designed absorbent papers that pull off the oil from your face keeping it clean and dry. The feeling of greasy and oily makes you lose your confidence at your work. These papers or cloth pads contain cleansing chemicals that work on the oil production throughout the day while cleansing the pores and skin.

  • Use masks to treat oily skin

Face masks are a good option to treat an oily face. Not only do these masks help to lower the sebum levels but also add shine to your face. Look for oil-absorbing ingredients in a mask like the one clay mask that won’t inhibit hydration. Get your mask for 10 minutes once a week to extract all the impurities from the skin and make it clean.
