Is it ok to leave the oil in your hair overnight?

leave the oil in your hair overnight

For years and generations, a deep hair oil massage has not changed. We still value the importance of oil nourishment to keep the hair shiny and healthy. Following our grandma’s routine, have we ever tried to find out if oiling is doing good as we expected. Because sometimes I too feel hair fall even after a proper hair care routine. To dig deep into the “oil massage” I found certain questions and while searching over their answers there are some good things that hit my way. Not only it is important to nourish your oil, but it’s more important to do it in the right way. So even if you have been doing it regularly for years, it is going to help you if you refresh your best practices. Ask these questions when you start your oil treatment.

Is it ok to leave the oil in your hair overnight?

No, avoid leaving oil in your hair overnight. Although hair oil works as a conditioner, but do not leave it on your head overnight unless you have extremely dry and frizzy hair.  Not everyone should oil their hair though. “Those with dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis, and psoriasis should stay away from oiling as it may increase flaking, causing dandruff to stick to the scalp.

I have seen my elders suggesting me to apply hair oil a day before the head wash so that all the moisture gets absorbed. But wait, I questioned when the reverse happened.

  • Overnight oiling headaches
  • Hair weakening and falling
  • Begins to develop oily scalp
  • And to get that load of oil you need a strong shampoo, more frizz, and dryness.

Everyone may not experience the same. But if you are practicing it regularly you are more likely to experience it soon. Vigorous hair care breaks a lot of hair and can even pull hair from follicles.

How long should you leave the oil on your hair?

Hair produces its own oil sebum, so applying too much and for too long will not do any wonders. Hardly 20-30 % of the oil gets absorbed. So there is no point that you put oil for hours and hours in thought that hair absorbs more.

Simply apply the oil to the hair for 2 to 3 hours, and then wash twice in the shower to remove the remaining traces of oil.

And the ones with dandruff and oily scalp should stay away from excessive oiling as it can make dandruff stick to the scalp. Hence resulting in redness, itching, and inflammation.

Consider also, that if you exercise you are more likely to possess a head wash daily or two to three times a week. In that case, the chances are that regular washing of your head can lead to dryness and sometimes wash out the natural shine of your hair.

An excess amount of sweat weakens the hair strand. That’s why it becomes important to lock in moisture for more time than regular.

Let your hair dry for 30 minutes after the exercise. Apply about 2 palmfuls of oil and gently massage 2 hours before or 30 minutes if running out of time.

And if you are too short of time, apply a small amount of oil and leave it till you exercise. This way the time is saved and the care is maintained. But sometimes girls think of oiling the hair at night. Do you think it’s good?

Hair that slays starts with good care….

How does oil gets absorbed?

To understand how the absorption takes place, let’s get into some hair science.

Any human hair has three layers, the outside cuticle made of keratin. The second layer of protein fibers. And the inner known as the medulla composed of round cells. Every hair comes out of an area called the hair follicle. The proper nourishment of the hair is when the nutrients get absorbed.

We put oil in our hair in order to moisturize and protect the hair. But technically hair does not absorb oil, rather the oil coats the hair strand.

The oil is unable to completely absorb into the hair. Instead, the oil coats the hair by latching onto cracks and holes in the hair shaft. The hair has a scaly surface which allows the oil to penetrate the hair as it slides down the hair and slips into those cracks. Our scalp which is made of pores surely absorbs oil like our skin but that too is to a very low extent. Because the sebum produced provides the real benefit to the hair.

How much oil should you apply?

How much to use depends on your length and type of hair. If you have dry and frizzy hair, apply a good amount of oil in a week. But the ones with greasy and oily scalp oil in a week or two, apply two to three palmfuls of oil stretching to the end of the strands.

Is regular oiling good?

Some of us are very sensitive to her beauty, that we prefer a regular head wash no matter what. And sometimes it is necessary is we have cardio training. It’s obvious to know if regular oiling is good before every wash. This is what I asked for. According to studies, it depends on your hair type. Some hair types need frequent oiling. Some need once in two weeks! Oily hair needs less. Curly hair needs more. Dry hair needs even more. But everyday oiling is not recommended. The maximum number of times dry hair can be treated with oil is on alternate days which over time will improve its moisture.

Oil treatment is essential to maintain the natural shine and texture of the hair. A basic oiling routine can be judicially followed even if your hair is dry, oily, or combination type.

Gently massage warm oil with your fingertips on the scalp. This can be a pre-shampooing routine.

Warm oil: increase blood circulation.

Shampoo

Without any thought of the hair type wash your hair properly to make it clean. Any oil or dirt or sweat be rid of using a shampoo. The frequency of washing depends on hair type.

  • Oily scalp- Shampoo on a regular basis. 3 to 4 times a week will be enough. Don’t overwash your hair. Because it can take away the natural shine.
  • Dry scalp-  Shampoo less and moisturize more. Use SLS shampoo as these are gentle to your scalp.
  • Normal scalp- the ones who have normal hair and scalp can wash their hair whenever necessary. You can wash your hair twice a week or based on your needs.

Never use Hot Water to shampoo.

Conditioning

Conditioning is the most important step in any hair care routine. Especially for the dry scalp, moisturizing is most important to prevent Frizzines. After washing your hair, you need to apply conditioner to the length of your hair and then rinse it after a few minutes.

  • Oily scalp- You can skip this step. As the natural oils from your hair are enough to moisturize your hair.
  • Normal or dry scalp- There is no point in skipping the conditioning. Every time you wash your hair, apply a good conditioner to moisturize.

Drying

Drying is not so looked step in any hair care routine. But it is important too. Once you are done with your shampooing, let your hair dry so that the access water will drain out. Make use of absorbent and soft towels. Avoid vigorous rubbing as it may cause harm to the hair cuticles. Wet hair is fragile and more prone to breaking. Rubbing wet hair also causes split ends. Start blotting from the top of the head and then move towards the end. Absorb excessive water from your strands. After soaking up hair wrap the towel around your head and let it absorb excess moisture from your hair. Keep it that way for five to ten minutes.
